Fall Community Clothing Swap w/ proceeds to RAICES

We all have more than we need, collectively. Those hiking boots you never wear anymore? What if your neighbor was just getting ready to buy some for an upcoming trip? Clothing swaps give our stuff a second chance at a new life, and reduces our impulse to buy new. With regular clothing swaps, your purchasing habits could greatly reduce in the clothing category, and you can feel good that a portion of your ticket went to benefit a local cause.

Tickets are $20.
50% of ticket sales will be donated to a non-profit organization to be announced
Price includes admission to shop (with at least 10 items to swap), plus mimosas and snacks.

Spring Community Clothing Swap - Benefitting Treasure City

Do you find yourself with a closet-full of clothes and nothing to wear? Have you been contemplating a wardrobe clean-out since you first heard the name Marie Kondo? Or maybe you’ve been to an Organized for Good clothing swap before and you’ve been waiting for this announcement, knowing that your next great secondhand fashion find is fast approaching. Good news folks. It’s time for our spring swap!

KonMari your clothes and bring items you’re no longer wearing (whatever no longer “sparks joy”) to exchange among a lovely community of women with great style. We’ll be accepting all secondhand clothes (mostly women’s clothes, but there are generally small collections of kids’ and mens’ stuff too). Please no household items, although you have my word that I will do a future household item swap!

Several of our past clothing swaps have supported Austin Pets Alive, so I wanted to show our human community some love this time around; I’ve selected to support Treasure City Thrift, which does excellent work supporting the community, especially those who are socio-economically disadvantaged and disenfranchised. They also share Organized for Good’s mission of diverting as much as possible from landfills, by finding ways to reuse, recirculate, and repurpose what we have and always shopping secondhand first to reduce manufacturing waste.

How to SWAP:

1. Register for the event on Eventbrite to reserve your spot. There is limited capacity so don’t delay!
2. Bring your gently used women's clothing, shoes and accessories with you to the Swap (If you don't need your hangers, bring your hanging items on hangers.
4. When you arrive, you'll confirm registration at the door, make your cash donation for Treasure City Thrift (suggested $10), and hang up your swap items on the designated racks. Once your items have been placed appropriately, you can begin your "swap shopping."
5. Any items on the designated racks or tables are yours for the choosing, and fitting rooms will be available.
6. Any items remaining after 2:30pm will be sorted and donated to Treasure City Thrift and other organizations listed here.

Ikigai Workshop: Finding Purpose, On Purpose with Sam Ushio

Ikigai Workshop: Finding Purpose, On Purpose with Sam Ushio

The Ikigai Workshop is designed to tackle the questions, "What are my true prioritiesHow do I find better alignment between my actions and priorities?"  Although the questions loom large, the curriculum uses simple, effective tactics to demystify heavy concepts like purpose to reveal insights with depth and meaning. Participants will leave with an approachable, practical framework to live with more intention. Find inspiration in unique stories from local Austinites who are living their ikigai.

  • Sam Ushio For 20 years, Sam Ushio climbed the corporate ladder in financial services. Working with thousands of financial advisors provided a unique perspective into the wealth management industry that eventually revealed an increasing dichotomy between financial growth and personal growth. Sensing this contrast on a personal level, Sam took the entrepreneurial leap. His quest for purpose led him to the story of his great-grandmother, Taka Ushio, whose ikigai preserved a family legacy in US and Japan before/during/after World War II. Her determination inspired Sam's commitment to empower himself and others to discover, plan, and live their ikigai.

  • Eric Silverstein from the Peached Tortilla, will discuss his journey from law to food truck to restauranteur. Born in Tokyo, Eric became immersed in Japanese food culture as a child. When his family moved to Atlanta, GA, he fell in love with Southern cooking. Silverstein eventually pursued a career in the food-truck industry, and has since been featured in The New York TimesPeopleKiplinger'sFood & Wine, and Details, as well as on Live! With Kelly & Michael, Food Network, and The Cooking Channel. Silverstein opened his first brick-and-mortar restaurant, The Peached Tortilla, in Austin, TX, in 2014 (named by The New York Times as “One of the Five Places to Go in Austin”). In 2016, Silverstein opened Peached Social House, a one-of-a-kind event and catering space, and in 2018, he opened The Peached Tortilla’s first fast-casual restaurant in Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

  • Erin Mursch from Organized For Good, Austin's first Certified KonMari Consultant, will discuss her journey to helping people transform chaos to order with Marie Kondo's famous decluttering method. In addition, Erin will share insights into how she helps clients put their life in order while gaining clarity on their values, priorities and purpose with the KonMari Method™ of home organization.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Health Alliance For Austin Musicians (H.A.A.M.), a non-profit organization that provides access to affordable health care for Austin’s low-income working musicians, with a focus on prevention and wellness.  H.A.A.M. is helping Austin's musicians live their ikigai!

What's an "IKIGAI?"

Ikigai is a Japanese phrase that translates into "your purpose".  Everyone has an ikigai, but we often neglect to take the time to discover and live it. Although western interpretations often associate ikigai with a job or work, ikigai can simply be the purpose that brings you joy and gets you out of the bed in the morning.

Ikigai is credited as a key element fueling longevity for some of the longest living people in the world.  Understanding your ikigai can promote lower stress, increased productivity, and a more happy, positive outlook.

Agenda

  • 0930-1000 Coffee + Networking

  • 1000-1030 Welcome

  • 1030-1145 Ikigai Defined.  Who, what, when, where, why, and how.

  • 1200-100p Taste Ikigai; Eric Silverstein, Peached Tortilla.

  • 100p-215p Perspective on Perspective:  Learn through the lens of others

  • 215p-300p Ikigai and Joy of Tidying; Erin Mursch, Austin's First Certified KonMari Consultant

  • 300p-345p Build Your Ikigai Roadmap

  • 345p-400p Closing Remarks

What will I get out of this?

Rarely, do people hit pause on the chaos of life to ask themselves simple, insightful questions. This workshop gets you into the right mindset to reveal quality insights by creating an environment with the right balance of focus, community, and momentum. If you're slightly skeptical, that's not a bad thing; You'll walk out energized and committed toward taking action that aligns with a greater sense of purpose.  If you're super-skeptical, then at least you'll get lunch and meet some cool people. (In reality, you'll get more out of this than most, but we'll keep that our secret.)

Who's leading the workshop?

For 20 years, Sam Ushio climbed the corporate ladder in financial services. Working with thousands of financial advisors as a management consultant eventually revealed a dichotomy between financial growth and personal growth. Portfolios were growing, but there was stagnant professional growth and surprisingly limited personal growth. Sensing this tension on a personal level, Sam made the entrepreneurial leap on July 4th, Independence Day. His quest for purpose led him to the story of his great-grandmother, Taka Ushio, whose ikigai preserved a family legacy in the US and Japan before, during, and after World War II. Her determination inspired Sam's commitment to empower others to discover and live their ikigai.

What does the fee include?

Curriculum, materials, and lunch from Peached Tortilla!

Clothing Swap Benefitting Girls Empowerment Network (in Partnership with ThredUP)

Let's Swap! // A clothing swap benefitting the Girls Empowerment Network.

Bring any clothing and accessories you no longer wear with you. All of the items are fair game, so you can trade and donate clothes to your friends and GEN Austin while snagging some new stuff to breathe new life into your closet.

Leading us will be Erin Mursch, owner of Organized for Good

No matter how organized we are, it's necessary to regularly inventory our clothing, because as we constantly grow and change physically and psychologically, so does our style of dress. While shopping is not a sustainable hobby (for the environment or for our wallets), many of us acknowledge that getting a new outfit can spark a thrill of joy. Clothing swaps allow us to unleash the potential of our no-longer-loved clothes, while saving ourselves some money, giving our closets some fresh space, and refreshing our styles. At the end of the swap, the remaining clothes are donated to some wonderful non-profit organizations in our community. Everybody wins!

This event is free for GAL members to participate and a $10 donation for non-members.

Snap Kitchen will be providing coffee & juice!
