How to Avoid Buying New Party Supplies

4th of July is almost here, which means parties, get-togethers and the surge of desire to buy new decorations and party supplies.

Not only can the constant purchasing of new decorations, tableware, and accessories become expensive, it also tends to fill up our storage spaces and become clutter (we all know it’s never just one bin). Thankfully, there are ways to create memorable and aesthetically pleasing themed parties without the waste!

Here are some simple tips on how to curb your consumption of decorations and party supplies:

  1.  Choose simple (neutral) place settings

The simplest and most cost effective tip is to buy napkins, plates, and utensils in a simple style that can be combined with other more theme-oriented decorations. White napkins, white paper plates and biodegradable wooden utensils are my go to’s! This means you’re not left with a few jungle-themed plates, graduation napkins, and princess pink forks.

The simple choice to omit the disposable themed items in exchange for a more classy and neutral look means you’ll always be prepared for the next event. Allow the company, conversations, and delicious food to be the center of attention, not the themed plates that go unnoticed anyway.

2. Repurpose and Reuse

Yes, we’re breathing new life into the items we already have around the house. Put on the creative goggles and find the mason jars, glass bowls and table cloths that can be repurposed into decor.

3. One thing borrowed

We all know someone who hasn’t read this blog and has bins upon bins of party paraphernalia. Borrowing not only saves money but those who host are more than likely to crack out some themed items for a special occasion. Just be sure to return them afterward, maybe with an extra slice of cake!

4. The DIYer

Add a special touch to parties by making homemade garlands, paper flowers, hand painted signs and my personal favorite: folded origami napkins. This recommendation comes with a warning, but Pinterest is a host to creative DIY projects that will be sure to keep you occupied before the big event.

5. This is no backyard party

For larger gatherings or special occasions, consider renting party supplies. Renting allows you to access a wide range of high-quality items, from tables and chairs to linens and dinnerware. It's an environmentally friendly option (if not an inexpensive one, compared to borrowing), and what I like best: you can return the items after the event.

The most important thing when you’re hosting a gathering is that it’s about the time spent with friends and family. We are in a culture that promotes consumerism at every turn, and there’s nothing like the stress of the last Target run before the special day. My advice: buy what you need and what will serve you in the future. The people will make the party.
